It’s World Water Day on Sunday, 22nd March. A day to celebrate, a day to change, a day to prepare.
World Water Day is marked on 22 March every year. It’s a day to celebrate water. It’s a day to make a difference for the members of the global population who suffer from water related issues. It’s a day to prepare for how we manage water in the future.
In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March as the first World Water Day. 22 years later, World Water Day is celebrated around the world shining the spotlight on a different issue every year. This issue is also the theme of the annual UN World Water Development Report which is launched on World Water Day.

An interview with a Hull based eco commercial cleaning company

1why-usIn the first of an occasional series, we get the inside track on some of our customers. Hull based eco commercial cleaning company, Lemonclean is the first to go and the questions were answered by Founder and Managing Director, Vicky Doyle.

How long has Lemonclean been established?

Lemonclean has been established for five and a half years.

Why did you set up Lemonclean?

I was looking for a business opportunity within the cleaning sector, but was undecided what direction I wanted to take, until I met Lloyd from Bio-D at the Hull Food Festival in 2009 and there was a lightbulb moment – my business would specialise in eco cleaning for businesses.

How many people work for Lemonclean?

We now employ 50 staff

How long have you been using Bio-D products?

Since the day that I started the business.  I love the fact that I can pop in to the factory, pick up my order and drop it off at cleaning sites on my way back to the office.

How did you hear about Bio-D in the first place?

Hull Food Festival

How far afield do you operate?

We operate throughout East Yorkshire, North East Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire

What do you like about Bio-D as a company?

I am passionate about their products and I love the people and the business ethos.  Environmental responsibility runs right through my business, from the recycled toilet rolls to the upcycled office furniture, so there is a great synergy between Lemonclean and Bio-D.

What do you like about Bio-D products?

The smell of the products takes me right back to those difficult days when I was establishing my business and reminds me how far I’ve come – you could say that Bio-D reminds me of the smell of success! I also like the fact that all of their products are effective, yet safe for me and my staff to use and help me to market Lemonclean as an environmentally friendly business that uses safe, luxury products.

What’s your favourite Bio-D product?

The Multi-surface sanitiser – I just love the smell of the orange oil and it cuts through grease brilliantly.

Is there anything else that you would like to add?

I’m very proud to say that I have never advertised and my client list inlcudes big names like Rix, Sewells, Jordans and Humberside Airport because we offer high standards of staff and excellent cleaning products.  Corporate Social Responsibility is high on many businesses’ agendas these days and Bio-D helps me to satisfy their CSR needs in terms of commercial cleaning.

Hull eco company’s 25th anniversary competition winner celebrates birthday with prize

Mr and Mrs Metcalfe toast their success in anniversary competitionThe lucky winner of Sutton Fields-based business The Bio-D Company’s competition was able to celebrate her birthday in style after winning the top prize.

The Bio-D Company, an ethical cleaning and laundry products manufacturer, teamed up with The Ramblers’ Rest in Millington to offer a two nights’ stay for the winner of its 25th anniversary competition

Alison Metcalfe and husband Kevin from Hull were picked at random after Mrs Metcalfe entered the competition ‘by chance’, and researched the company online to find the correct answer to the question ‘In what year was Bio-D founded?’

The full-time carer said: “It was really nice to stay at The Ramblers’ Rest following my 58th birthday and we were well looked after by Angela and Jeremy Sissons.

“I couldn’t fault them – Angela really was the host with the most and a highlight was the lovely evening meal by an open fire she’d set up for us. I’d like to thank Bio-D and The Ramblers’ Rest for a lovely time.”

Mr and Mrs Metcalfe visited Millington Woods and neighbouring Yorkshire Wolds villages, as well as spending time in Naburn and the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet in York.

Mrs Metcalfe is now considering recommending the company’s products for her sister-in-law’s cleaning company.

Ethically motivated cleaning company grows with new site facility

Bio D new facilityA Hull based eco cleaning and detergent company has expanded into a new industrial unit following a £100,000 investment to meet growing demand.

The Bio-D Company has taken out a five-year lease on a 16,000sq ft unit, almost four times the size of its previous unit in Sutton Fields, four years after its current owners Lloyd Atkin and Sara Holtby took over the business.

The new industrial unit is the latest in a series of investments that has seen the business grow to 11 staff and turnover figure almost double since Mr Atkin and Ms Holtby bought the company in 2010.

The new site houses offices, meeting rooms, storage areas, five blending tanks with capacity from 1,000 to 10,000 litres, three production lines, a vertical form, filling and sealing machine and a production area for quality development and testing.

This year, The Bio-D Company celebrated 25 years in business after naval entrepreneur Michael Barwell started the business in 1988.

The business is receiving a grant from the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership which funds a percentage of the capital as the company installs further new equipment.

Managing Director Mr Atkin said the company has taken a leap and moved to expand their approach and capacity.

“It is a really exciting time for us – everyone is looking forward to the challenge of growing into it and fulfilling our potential in the new site.

“We hope to expand our team to 15 by the end of next year to take on more technical staff and we’re aiming to hire at least two people per year.”

With the old site just 200 metres away, Mr Atkin added that it is important for the company to remain in Hull.

“It is here that Bio-D was born and our employees, all local people, are extremely important to us – they would not want to move out of the area. Hull is the home of Bio-D.”
