Green Hull business offers eco awards help to local schools

Hull green cleaning products business Bio-D is offering help to local schools who are considering applying for Eco-Schools awards.

The Eco-Schools programme is focused on nine key topics. These are energy, water, biodiversity, school grounds, healthy living, transport, litter, waste and global citizenship.  Schools initially work towards the Bronze award, then progress to Silver and then the coveted Green Flag.

Bio-D Managing Director Lloyd Atkin said; “Apart from the obvious benefits of encouraging children to respect their environment by minimising waste and encouraging biodiversity, the Eco Schools awards give pupils an opportunity to engage with the local community and this is where we’d like to help.  A member of our team has experience in helping a school to achieve the Green Flag award and would like to offer her help to local schools.”

Yorkshire is ranked seventh out of the nine Government regions for the amount of eco schools awards it holds – 96 Green Flags, 311 Silver awards and 404 Bronze awards.  In contrast, top performing South East region boasts 296 Green Flags, 836 Silver awards and 815 Bronze awards.

Eco-Schools is managed in England by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, the anti-litter campaign for England. The programme is one of five environmental education programmes run internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). In addition to Eco-Schools, FEE runs Green Key, Young Reporters for the Environment, Blue Flag and Learning about Forests.

Eco-Schools is run in 53 countries around the world, linking more than 40,000 schools – from the UK to France and from Morocco to South Africa. Eco-Schools is administered in Scotland by Keep Scotland Beautiful; in Wales by Keep Wales Tidy; and in Northern Ireland by Tidy Northern Ireland.

Comet chooses Bio-D as ethical partner in unique initiative

Leading electrical retailer Comet has teamed up with UK ethical business Bio-D to sell ethical laundry products in all its stores.

The initiative sees Bio-D’s environmentally responsible, hypoallergenic and chemical free Laundry Liquid and concentrated Lavender Fabric Conditioner on sale alongside washing machines and washer dryers in 250 stores throughout the UK.

Commenting on the launch, Comet’s Assistant Buyer for Home Appliance Essentials Robert Macpherson-Smith said; “As an increasing number of washing machine purchase decisions are based on energy efficiency grades and environmental concerns, it makes sense to offer consumers a laundry brand that respects the environment too.”

Of the deal, Bio-D’s Managing Director Lloyd Atkin said; “We applaud Comet’s thinking and look forward to extending distribution of Bio-D’s best selling laundry lines both into Comet’s stores and online.”

Robert continued; “We selected Bio-D because we identified with the company’s ethos and we know that the fact that they are UK made is important to our customers.”

The new lines are in store and online now.  The RSP of the 1 litre Laundry Liquid is £4.99 and the 1 litre Lavender Fabric Conditioner is £3.99, but both are on offer for £6.00 when bought with a washer or washer/dryer.

New distributor to drive sales as Co-op highlights green growth

We’re delighted to report that we’ve just appointed a new distributor in a bid to drive sales.

Staffordshire based natural products specialist Tree of Life was selected by Bio-D Directors Sara Holtby and Lloyd Atkin following a strategic sales review a year after they bought the business from founder Mike Barwell.

Managing Director Lloyd Atkin outlined the rationale for the appointment; “We have spent the last year undertaking a thorough review of the business and are now in a position to drive sales of our biodegradable products forward.  We know from the Co-op’s report on Ethical Consumerism that expenditure on green goods and services grew 18 per cent over the past two years despite the economic downturn and thought that the time was right to mount a sales campaign.”

Tree of Life supplies over 1100 health food shops and independent retailers and will be selling over 30 Bio-D lines from later this month – look out for them in your local store.
